Kathmandu Jan 29 : The ruling coalition parties have agreed to hold local level elections within Jestha end of 2079 BS. All the parties in the alliance have agreed to the proposal of the Prime Minister and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba. Deuba had made such a proposal in the meeting on Saturday morning.

After internal discussions within the party, a meeting of the coalition with legal experts was held at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar on Saturday evening. CPN (Maoist Center) leader Narayan Kaji Shrestha informed Nepalpage that the meeting agreed to hold local elections within June, 14, 2022 . “It has been agreed to hold local elections in June. The government will fix the date of the election in consultation with the Election Commission, ‘Shrestha told.

Earlier, the coalition had been holding discussions to hold local elections only after September.

The Election Commission has already proposed a date for the election in April-May. However, Prime Minister Deuba has agreed to hold the election in May-June after widespread criticism that the coalition had planned to postpone the election against the commission’s proposal. Even President Vidyadevi Bhandari in a meeting with Deuba on Thursday had requested not to hold local elections in writing. Deuba, who was under pressure from within the party and from all quarters, had concluded that the local elections should be held with in June after discussions with party officials only on Friday.

The constitution provides for a five-year term for local level people’s representatives. However, according to the provisions of the Act, the local level will be without people’s representatives on May 16.
