Kathmandu : Incumbent Chairperson of the CPN (Maoist Center) Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has been re-elected chairperson of the party unopposed.
Prachanda was elected unopposed as the chairperson by the first meeting of the new central committee of the party held at the Heritage Garden at Sanepa Heights in Lalitpur this afternoon, according to central member Himal Sharma.
The proposal to elect Prachanda as the party chair was made by leader Narayan Kaji Shrestha and seconded by leader Krishna Bahadur Mahara. The proposal was unanimously approved by the members of the central committee. After being elected unopposed as the chairperson, Prachanda addressed the Central Committee meeting.
The meeting of the Maoist Central Committee began after swearing-in of the newly elected central members.
The meeting will decide on the office bearers other than the chairperson. Apart from one chair, the party’s executive committee comprises one senior vice-chair, six vice-chairs, one general secretary, two deputy general secretaries, three secretaries and one treasurer.
Meanwhile, members of the newly-elected Central Committee of the party have taken oath. The newly-elected central members took oath before the meeting of the Central Committee that was held at the Heritage Garden in Sanepa, Lalitpur.
The newly-elected central members were sworn in by the party’s Central Election Commission Chairman Bishnu Pukar Shrestha. The 8th National General Convention of the Maoist Center, which started on December 26, elected 236 central members on Sunday. The number includes 111 from the open category and 125 from the inclusive category.
The Maoist Center amended the statute with a provision to have a 299-member Central Committee. A total of 15 percent CC members will be nominated by the Central Committee.
The first meeting of the Central Committee has started after the oath taking ceremony on Monday afternoon. The Central Committee meeting is expected to elect the party’s central office bearers.
