On Monday, Ambassador Yancqi held a two-hour long discussion at Oli’s residence in Balkot and advised the Left to unite once again before the upcoming election, an UML official said.
During the meeting, Yanqi briefed Oli on the current world situation, China’s role, and the recent policy adopted by the Chinese Communist Party. Explaining the geopolitical situation in South Asia and the Chinese interest in Nepal, reviewing the past mistakes and weaknesses in Nepal once again, Ambassador Yanqi said that China wants the UML and the CPN (M) should be united.
Sources said that Prachanda was not ready for the proposal of Ambassador Yanqi to join the UML. Oli had urged Ambassador Yanqi to pressurize Prachanda for unity.
According to a CPN (Maoist) leader, Prachanda refused to alliance with the UML when a senior leader close to Oli offered to unite l with the party even before and after the UML General Convention.
According to the senior Maoist leader, Prachanda had replied that there was no possibility of unity unless there was a public self-criticism by Oli.
Oli had said in a telephone conversation with the Prachanda right before the UML General Convention that he could move forward on the basis of the previous unity formula to alliance in the upcoming election.
According to sources, Oli has become angry with Prachanda after he showed reluctance to meet and talk saying that there is no possibility of unity before the upcoming election.
According to a high level source, Chinese high-ranking officials suggested a long video conversation with Maoist Chairman Prachanda in the first week of December to unite with Oli.
After that, the Chinese leader also informed about the conversation he had with Prachanda with UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel.
Shortly after the UML’s 10th general convention, Chinese Deputy Minister Chao Yun held a video conference with newly elected General Secretary Shankar Pokharel. It is said that Pokhrel replied to the Chinese leader that Prachanda did not interested to unite both party due to the Indian interest even though he was in favor of unity.
Lately, CPN-UML Chairman Oli has taken the strategy to unite with Prachanda in any way, analyzing that the UML’s electoral status will be weaker than in 2064 BS if it does not alliance with the Maoists in the upcoming election.
Oli has put forward a strategy to force Prachanda to coordinate the election by whatever means to deceive him or increase the pressure.
Oli has adopted a strategy of breaking the current ruling alliance and forcing Prachanda to reconcile with the UML even after removing him from power. According to the same plan, Oli has promised to help Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba to pass the MCC from the parliament.
In a meeting with Oli, Chinese Ambassador Yanqi said that the MCC should not be passed and urged to take initiative for that.
US officials and Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba are hoping that the MCC will be passed the MCC by parliament soon after the Maoists’ national conference.
