Impact of floods and landslides: 4 concrete bridges and 13 roads damaged, Rs 7.5 billion required for emergency repairs

Kathmandu : The ‘Bailey Bridge’ of the Timang River was destroyed by the floods that came after incessant rains on July 20. The main road to Manang has been blocked since the bridge collapsed.

The bridge has not been able to come into operation even though it was said that the road would be repaired and operated unilaterally.

This will take some time, said Engineer Deepak Shrestha, Deputy Director General of the Bridge Division under the Road Department.

The bridge, which came into operation after the completion of construction, was destroyed by floods as soon as the monsoon started.

Similarly, the bridge of Liping Khola at Barhabise in Sindhupalchowk was also damaged by the floods. The access road between the road and the bridge is still blocked.

Stating that there is no access road and some damage has been done to the bridge, the department said that it will take time to bring this road back in operation.

These bridges that have been constructed and come into operation are just an example, other bridges under construction have also been damaged by floods and landslides.

Floods in the Jhimruk River in Pyuthan have destroyed a bridge under construction on the river. Deputy Director General of the Bridge Division Shrestha said that the bridge collapsed due to rain less than four days after the demolition.

Shrestha told, “The bridge has been affected due to the early onset of monsoon.” It had been only 4 days since the landslide and it was destroyed by the flood. ‘

Along with this, since the onset of monsoon motorable bridges have been damaged in four different places in a period of one week, according to the Bridge Division. some of the bridges were damaged due to the earlier-than-expected monsoon shrestha told.

Apart from this, if we look at the statistics since last April, the motorable bridges in 8 different places have been damaged.
In the current Fiscal Year 2077/78, the government has given a budget of Rs. 4.6 billion to the Department of Roads for the maintenance of national highways.

Similarly, the budget of Rs 3.38 billion saved from the Road Board in the past is also in the department. Thus, out of the total amount of Rs. 7.44 billion, some amount has already been spent for the emergency maintenance of the road.

According to the department, the budget is insufficient for the rehabilitation of the damaged roads.

However, the department estimates that this budget will cover the operation of the road unilaterally or bilaterally if possible.
