COVID-19 kills 7,146, infects 298,414 in SAARC region; 116,369 recover

KATHMANDU: Coronavirus has killed 7,146 people in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) region as of Saturday morning.

According to the latest figures collated by Worldometer, 4,980 died in India, 1,317 in Pakistan, 582 in Bangladesh, 246 in Afghanistan, 10 in Sri Lanka, six in Nepal and four in the Maldives taking the tally to 7,146 in the SAARC member states. Meanwhile, 116, 369 people have recovered after treatment.

India, the worst-hit among SAARC member states, comes second in Asia with the highest number of deaths. Iran is the worst-hit with 7, 677 deaths in Asia followed by India with 4, 980. Similarly, 4,634 died in China (3rd), and 4,489 Turkey (fourth).

India

The death toll in India from Coronavirus has reached 4,980 as of Saturday morning after 269 died in the last 24 hours.

With 8,105 new cases, the number of infection cases has climbed to 173,491. Currently, 85,884 are undergoing treatment at various hospitals in the country while 82,627 have returned home after recovery.

Pakistan

Pakistan, the second worst-hit in the SAARC region, has recorded 1,317 deaths so far while 64, 028 have been infected. The number of deaths surged to 1,317 after 57 more died as of Saturday morning.

With 2,801 new cases, the number of infection cases has reached 64, 028 in Pakistan. Currently, 40,406 are undergoing treatment, while 22,305 have recovered after treatment.

 Bangladesh

The death toll from the Coronavirus in Bangladesh has climbed to 582 with 42,844 infected, so far. Currently, 33,247 are undergoing treatment at various hospitals in the country, of which 9,015 have recovered.

Afghanistan

Afghanistan has reported 246 deaths and 13,659 people have been infected as of Saturday morning. Currently, 12,154 are undergoing treatment at various hospitals while 1,259 have recovered home after treatment.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has reported 10 deaths and 1,558 infection cases as of Saturday morning.  Currently, 794 are undergoing treatment while 754 have returned home after recovery.

Nepal

Nepal has reported six deaths and 1,212 infection cases so far. Currently, 1,000 are undergoing treatment while 206 have recovered after treatment.

Maldives

The death toll in the Maldives has reached five while 1,591 have been infected from the Coronavirus so far. Currently, 1,389 people are undergoing treatment at various hospitals in the country, of which 197 have recovered.

Bhutan

Bhutan has reported 31 infection cases. Six among those infected with the novel virus have recovered after treatment while 25 are undergoing treatment at the hospital.
