Kathmandu : Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, along with the leaders of the ruling coalition, has proposed that the US aid project MCC be passed even amid the siege and uproar of the main opposition UML. coalition chiefs have rejected PM Deuba’s proposal.
On Friday and Saturday, Deuba had separate talks with Prachanda and Madhav Nepal about passing MCC. According to sources in Baluwatar, the leaders of the coalition partnersl, CPN-Maoist Centre Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda and CPN-US Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal have taken a stand that the proposal should not be moved without all party consensus.
According to a minister, the ruling coalition has agreed to introduce the MCC only after holding discussions with all parties and interacting with intellectuals as per the middle ground proposal of CPN (MC) Chairman Prachanda.
The all-party meeting to be held today has also been convened with the objective of reaching a consensus on the MCC. From the beginning, Prime Minister Deuba and his party, the Nepali Congress, have been in favor of passing the MCC, while the Maoists and the CPN-US have been opposed to it since its inception.
Lately, US officials have been increasing pressure on leaders, including Deuba, to pass the MCC. Deuba is under anti-MCC vote from the coalition partnerl and is under pressure from the US to pass.
