MCC should be taken forward with amendments: Nepal

Kathmandu: CPN (Unified Socialist) Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal has said that the agreement reached between the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and the Government of Nepal should be taken forward with amendments.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday to inform about the new party’s plan, Chairman Nepal said that the MCC should move ahead as suggested by the task force formed by the then CPN  under the coordination of Jhala Nath Khanal.

‘The MCC should move forward by reforming, modifying. It should be used in the interest of Nepal and it should not be part of any strategic plan. Don’t target against foreigners, ‘said Chairman Nepal. He said that the MCC should move forward without axing Nepali interests.

Nepal made it clear that its party was of the view that the MCC study task force headed by Khanal should move forward as per the norms put forward.

The then CPN had formed a task force under the coordination of Khanal with the then Foreign Minister Pradip Gyawali and Bhim Rawal to study the MCC. Khanal and Rawal, who were in the task force, had suggested that the MCC should be moved forward with amendments, while Gyawali had written a dissenting opinion that should be passed  as the same  by the parliament.

The plan fell through when the parties split over the MCC. The MCC states that large projects in these areas will be taken forward with the joint investment of the United States and Nepal in Nepal’s energy and road infrastructure.

In a different question Nepal has given a message to Bagmati Chief Minister Ashtalakshmi Shakya and province 1 Chief Minister Bhim Acharya that they cannot be supported in the current situation.
