Kathmandu : Chief Minister Shankar Pokharel’s government is in crisis as the Supreme Court has not issued an interim order to reinstate three JSP’s MPs from Lumbini Province.
A no-confidence motion has been registered against Pokhrel in the provincial assembly. Province Chief Amik Sherchan has called a special session of parliament to discuss the proposal.
After the Supreme Court immediately upheld the party’s action against three JSP MPs who were also ministers in Pokhrel’s government, it has been decided that Pokhrel will have a minority vote.
With the expelled of three MPs, the Lumbini province assembly has grown to 80 members.
In Lumbini, the ruling CPN-UML has 38 MPs. A majority requires 41 MPs. The opposition coalition has 42 MPs, one of whom is the speaker.
There are 19 Nepali Congress, 19 Maoist Center, 3 JSP and 1 Janamorcha MPs.
A no-confidence motion against Pokhrel had already been registered in the parliament. However, he resigned in the morning and took the oath of office again in the evening in a month ago.
At that time, he claimed that the UML had a single majority. After the opposition staged a sit-in at the residence of the province chief, the then province chief Dharmanath Prasad Yadav went to Pokhrel’s residence and administered the oath to him. Yadav was the ruling party UML’s center leader also.
