Indian Ambassador to Nepal VM Kwatra appointed Foreign Secy

 

Kathmandu 4 April : Indian Ambassador to Nepal Vinay Mohan Kwatra has been appointed as the Foreign Secretary to the Government of India. The Indian government on Monday made public Kwattra’s appointment in a press statement.

Kwatra had entered the diplomatic service in 1988. Kwatra has previously held important positions as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs and the Prime Minister’s Office of the Government of India. From 2010 to 2013, he served at the Indian Embassy in the United States, and from July 2013 to October 2015, Kwatra served as head of the Department of Policy Planning and Research, as well as the US Division at the State Department.

Incumbent Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and Kwatra’s role in expanding India’s relations with the United States and Canada during that period is noteworthy.

Kwatra has also made significant contributions to India’s foreign policy making. Kwatra, who has more than 30 years of professional experience, was appointed Ambassador to Nepal in January 2020. The Modi administration seems happy that his tenure in Nepal has been successful. He is considered a diplomat within Modi’s policy-making core group. He is more effective and result oriented diplomacy than propaganda. He will assume the post of Foreign Secretary from April 30 this month. Kwatra is displacing Harshavardhana Shringala. Former Foreign Secretary S Jaya Shanker is now Foreign Minister of Modi cabinet.
