Tough day Of Prachanda, Madhav silent but PM Deuba committed to table MCC today

Kathmandu Feb 16:  The ruling Nepali Congress has moved to table the US Assistance Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) in Parliament. The Congress has decided to table the MCC in any case through a meeting of the party’s Central Working Committee and the parliamentary parties. With such a decision of the Nepali Congress, it is now difficult for the CPN-Maoist to stay in the government.

Prime Minister and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has made the ruling coalition and the party MCC-centric in the last two weeks. Even if the alliance is broken, the Congress has agreed to table and pass the MCC in the parliament. Since Tuesday, the Congress has been strongly supporting the MCC from inside and outside the parliament.

Meanwhile, Deuba was unable to persuade his ruling partner, the Maoist Center, and the CPN (Unified Socialist) to side with the MCC until Tuesday. However, the Congress has moved the ‘movement’ to table in the MCC parliament. Due to such ‘move’ of the Congress, Prachanda and Madhav Nepal are now in a position to either stand on the side of MCC or leave the government.

Prime Minister Deuba had called the speaker from the in between of the parliamentary party meeting and urged him not to be an obstacle in moving the MCC forward. After this, the Congress has institutionally put pressure on the Speaker.

One of the leaders said that the Congress had warned the Speaker not to stop the MCC Parliament from presenting and discussing issues related to national interest, international relations, economic diplomacy and infrastructure development.

It has not been decided whether the ruling coalition partners Maoists and the Unified Socialists will join the MCC. Among them, the Maoists have warned to leave the government, while Madhav Nepal is mostly silent.

According to a Congress lawmaker, Madhav Nepal is positive about passing the MCC. He also showed flexibility in passing the MCC at Monday’s all-party meeting. However, leaders within his party, including Jhala Nath Khanal, are adamantly opposed to the MCC.
