Indian security personnel leave Nepali embassy in New Delhi

NEW DELH Jan 12 I: Indian security personnel stationed at the Nepali embassy in New Delhi for years have been lifted. They were lifted by the Indian government following repeated requests from the embassy.

There were 10 Indian security personnel inside the Nepalese embassy in New Delhi, even though it was against the diplomatic norms for foreign security personnel to stay inside the embassies of foreign countries. The Sikkim police had set up a small barracks to guard the embassy. “Six years ago, when Deep Kumar Upadhyay became the ambassador, security personnel came and started living inside,” said an embassy staffer.

Nilambar Acharya had repeatedly requested the foreign officials to left the security personnel after he became the ambassador. Three months before his return, he wrote a letter to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs demanding the removal of security personnel from the embassy.

‘Nilambar Sir had stopped Indian security personnel from playing and running inside the embassy premises. He spoke in support of the US Alliance, but said that maintaining some independence was not the answer.

Although the entire security of the outside of the embassy is provided by the same country, the responsibility for the mainten and security of the inside area rests with the embassy. There is a post of SSP from Nepal Police in the embassy. Besides, Nepal Police has no other manpower. A security official who returned from the embassy said that it was necessary to create some posts of Nepal Police personnel for the internal security of the Delhi embassy which is spread over a large area.
