Chinese ambassador’s rush: one-day meeting with PM Deuba, Prachanda and Madhav Nepal, 1.6 million vaccine gifts

Kathmandu : On Friday, Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Hou Yanqi met with Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and other top leaders of the coalition.

After Deuba was appointed as the Prime Minister, Ambassador Hou Yanqi reached Baluwatar to congratulate him. Along with the congratulations, China will provide additional 1.6 million vaccines against the corona virus to Nepal, said Yanqii. During the meeting, Deuba said he wanted to strengthen ties with China. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Chinese Ambassador said that china is ready to provide further assistance to Nepal in the fight against the corona virus epidemic.

Yanqi congratulated and gifted of Chinese ceramics to PM Deuba.

Immediately after meeting the Prime Minister, Ambassador Yanqi reached Prachanda’s residence in Khumaltar to meet CPN-Maoist Centre Chairman and former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda. Although she met Prachanda, she also met senior UML leader and former prime minister Madhav Nepal at his residence. During the meeting, the Chinese Ambassador discussed the latest political developments. She is also said to be interested in how Nepal’s ‘political course’ will move forward now.

China has not yet commented on Nepal’s latest political developments. After Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli dissolved the House of Representatives for the first time on 20 December 2020, causing a split in the then Communist Party of Nepal (NCP), China sent a high-level political team to understand Nepal’s political situation.

On January 19, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed interest in Nepal’s political developments in a telephone conversation with outgoing Foreign Minister Pradip Gyawali. After the dissolution of the House of Representatives for the second time at midnight on May 22, china did not respond. But soon there has been a virtual collective discussion with all the political parties, big and small, in Nepal.

While inquiring about China’s relationship with the Deuba-led government, the ambassador met with leaders who played a role in building the alliance and tried to show that China was in favor of the coalition government.

There has been a perception in China that no matter which government is in Nepal, it will not make any difference. But after the recent dispute of the CPN(UML), a Chinese special team is active in Kathmandu to protect the unity of the UML. According to UML leaders, the Chinese embassy has been pressuring the two sides to unite.

After Sher Bahadur Deuba was appointed as the Prime Minister, Indian Ambassador Vinay Mohan Kwatra and US Ambassador Randy Berry also met Deuba and congratulated him. Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and the ruling party’s BJP foreign affairs chief Dr. Vijay Chauthaiwale had congratulated Deuba over telephone. But Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not congratulated Deuba on the phone or on social media.
