
Kathmandu, July 16: Seven people have been killed in floods and landslides in Sindhupalchowk district on Tuesday evening. Chief District Officer Arun Kumar Pokhrel said police and people’s representatives had confirmed the deaths of seven people. According to him, there have been no further reports of human casualties.
Floods and landslides in Melamchi and Helambu on Tuesday evening have caused extensive damage. Three bridges have collapsed in Helambu and one in Melamchi. Roads have also collapsed, disrupting traffic.
Chief District Officer Pokharel said that preparations are being made to operate Nepal Army helicopters and other private helicopters as there is no walking condition.
He said that the flow of water in Melamchi has not decreased. He said that caution has been exercised as further damage could occur if the flow enters the settlement.
The risk of flood in Melamchi river of Sindhupalchowk has also increased in Melamchi bazaar. Details of the damage are being collected, he said. As the monsoon enters Nepal, it is raining in many parts of the country. Due to the low pressure area around eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in India, it will rain in many parts of the country for another four to five days, according to the Meteorological Department.
The Department of Water and Meteorology has issued a special bulletin urging to be vigilant as there is a possibility of heavy rain in Gandaki, Lumbini and some parts of Bagmati. Along with the rains, the water level in various rivers has also risen. The flood forecasting department has issued warnings in the coastal areas of Myagdi, Syangja, Chitwan and Gulmi due to the rising water level in the Narayani River.
