Opposition coalition succeeds in forming government in Gandaki after sit-ins and widespread pressure

Pokhara June12 . Dismissed Chief Minister Prithvi Suvva Gurung had made a fake claim at the last moment not to allow Nepali Congress parliamentary party leader Krishnachandra Nepali Pokhrel to be appointed as the Chief Minister. A majority of Gandaki provincial assembly members had staged a sit-in at the chief’s office to protest against the UML’s bad intentions.

Leader of the CPN-UML parliamentary party and Chief Minister of the caretaker government Prithvi Subba Gurung had objected to the fake claim. Gurung had made the demand in support of Krishna Thapa of the Rastriya Janmorcha, who had resigned from the province committee and province assembly members of the Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP).

On behalf of the opposition alliance, Pokharel had on Friday submitted his demand for the appointment of the chief minister as per Article 168 (5) of the constitution with the physical presence of 31 province assembly members. The members of the province assembly had signed in the office of the province chief.

Opposition lawmakers, who were awaiting the appointment of Chief Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung, went to the province headquarters and staged a sit-in. He said that the JSP parliamentary party and both the MPs had the support of Nepalis and that Gurung’s claim was fake. Janamorcha Whip Piyari Thapa also said that it was a constitutional crime to submit a claim to the Chief Minister in support of Krishna Thapa as the party was not even an ordinary member and had resigned from the post.

Congress province assembly member Kumar Khadka had warned that if they did not accept the majority, they would break the ban and launch a political movement against regression and go to court.

After a two-and-a-half-hour sit-in, Krishna Chandra, finally supported by a majority of MPs, was appointed as the Chief Minister Gandaki province.
At present, Pokhrel has the support of 15 members of the Nepali Congress, 11 members of the CPN-Maoist Center, two members of the JSP, two members of the Rajmo and Deepak Manange, an independent MP.
UML, which has been in power for more than three years, has become an opposition party. UML has 27 MPs.
