2 firefighters killed as building on fire collapses in India’s Tamil Nadu

NEW DELHI, Nov. 14 Two firefighters were killed and two others injured Saturday as a building which was on fire partially collapsed in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, police said.

The fire broke out in a textile store in Vilakkuthoon area of Madurai district, about 462 km south of Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu.

“Today fire broke out inside a textile store here, following which firefighters rushed to the spot to contain the blaze. However, two firefighters were killed and two others injured after a portion of the building collapsed,” a police official said, adding “the two injured personnel have been removed to hospital.”

Officials said the building collapsed while the firefighters were splashing water to douse the blaze.

The firefighters were buried under the debris. The rescuers had to bring earthmover to pull out the bodies and the injured.
