Parajuli’s story collection ‘kumata’ reviewed

Chitwan, July 26

Popular youth story writer Basant Parajuli’s latest creation, Kumata (bad mother), a compilation of stories was reviewed at a function here on Saturday.

The compilation of stories challenges the social norm that ‘a son can be a bad son, but never a mother’. Speaking at the programme, senior litterateur Gayatri Shrestha said the book makes a micro analysis of women’s sensitivity. It is also a document of the problems facing the women in the Nepali society.

Women rights activist Meena Kharel described the book as a lively picture of the current anomalies and aberrations in the society, with a focus on women. Chairperson of Chitwan Literary Council Surendra Astafal, critic Ramesh Prabhat, Prof Shanti Sharma and a host of other speakers lauded Parajuli for highlighting an important issue of the society, while noting that it makes the society re-think of the compulsion that it imposes on a mother to become a bad mother.

The book compiling stories of social pragmatism and women sex psychology was released for the first time on March 9. The review comes after the second edition was published in a relatively short time.

Also a senior journalist, Parajuli has been involved in journalism and literature since the past two decades.
