Swarm of Locusts enter Nepal

Swarm of Locusts have entered in some places of Parsa, Bara and Sarlahi of Nepal.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development has called an emergency meeting after locusts entered in these three districts of Nepal. According to the Ministry, locusts were spotted at 8 am on Saturday in some places that borders India. The meeting has been called to handle and minimize the possible damage to be caused by insects

The farmers had informed the Agriculture Knowledge Center, Bara, after seeing locusts in the trees this morning. Earlier, the ministry had formed a committee comprising agricultural scientists and technicians under the chairmanship of the head of the Plant Quarantine and Pesticide center, saying that locusts could enter Nepal.

Locust is similar to the insect, grasshopper. They are destructive in nature. The locusts which were originated in East Africa had arrived in India and Pakistan via the Middle East few days ago, which have incurred a heavy loss on crops across the state. They follow the direction of wind and travel for 130 km in a swarm of 50 to 90 million, said agricultural scientists. It is said that they damage crops corresponding to the foods that be sufficient for 40,000 people per day.
