NA lawmakers bat for effective diplomatic talks to return encroached lands from India

Kathmandu, June 18 : Lawmakers representing different political parties have shown same stand on national sovereignty and national interest in the meeting of the National Assembly (NA) today. Taking part in the clause-wise discussion on the Constitution of Nepal (2nd amendment) Bill, lawmakers have stressed the need of adopting effective diplomatic channel to return the encroached territory back to Nepal. The government had recently tabled the amendment bill to update the country’s Coat of Arms by incorporating Lipulek, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura. Earlier, the bill was unanimously passed by the House of Representatives.

The Indian side had unilaterally constructed and inaugurated a link road to China’s Mansarobar via Nepali territory. Talking part in the discussion at today’s meeting, ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) lawmaker Dinanath Sharma argued that the Nepalis are showing same stance on national agenda and sovereignty. He asked for cordial and friendly behaviours from India to resolve the border dispute. Sharma further said India should return the lands as per Sugauali Treaty.

He was also for internationalizing the issue if Nepal was denied the encroached lands via diplomatic talks. Similarly, leader of the main opposition party in National Assembly, Radhe Shyam Adhikari, said that border between Nepal and India was demarcated as per Sugauli Treaty of 1816 and Kalapani, Limpiyadhura and Lipulek are Nepal’s territory as these areas are in the east of the Mahakali River. Stressing the need of bringing its territory back on the basis of talks and discussion, Adhikari said Nepal needs to ensure its presence in the area by sending back the Indian Army from Kalapani. Shekhar Kumar Singh of Rastriya Janata Party said Nepalis living in Tarai area of the country are the security personnel fighting in the frontline for the border security. He expressed the belief that the government should move ahead to resolve border problem by taking all Nepalis in confidence.

“Prime Minister has brought all political parties into confidence in the national issues and he would get success after bringing the encroached land back during his term.” He further said there would be strong support of Madheshi parties to the government on the issue of nationality. Likewise, Pramila Kumari of Samajbadi Party supported the government for issuing new map by incorporating the encroached land and suggested to bring the land back by holding diplomatic dialogue
